Meet our Survivor honoree of the 2008 Heart Walk, Andrew Garcia and his family

Born: July 29, 1999

MY HEART DISEASE AND MY BIRTH
I was born with a heart disease known as tetrology of Fallot. What this means is that I was born with a hole in my heart which does not allow blood to properly flow through the chambers of the heart to my lungs to get oxygen then back out to my body. Instead what happens is that dirty blood is cycled through my body rather than being refreshed with oxygen by my lungs. Also, the pulmonary artery is narrow restricting the blood flow which makes my heart work much harder. It’s like trying to blow air threw a pinched straw.
My mom and dad learned about my heart defect about one month before I was born.
